Gunsen - The Battle for Toshi Ranbo (EN)

Rokugan teeters on the brink of chaos. In Gunsen: The Battle for Toshi Ranbo, the seven Great Clans of the Legend of the Five Rings universe - the Crab, Crane, Dragon, Lion, Phoenix, Scorpion and Unicorn - clash for control of the legendary fortress of Toshi Ranbo. Once a strategic gem of the borderlands, the castle now stands at the heart of a war-torn battlefield, where rival warlords seek glory and vengeance. Steel is drawn, elemental magic hums, ancient shrines smolder and village alliances shift like the wind.

In this strategy game for 2 to 6 players, you play an ambitious daimyo leading one of the seven clans. You recruit samurai heroes, pick powerful orders through open drafting and build your tableau to grow your clan's military might and influence. On a hexagonal grid, you deploy your troops, roll the battle dice and fight over villages, shrines and watchtowers. Victory objectives are varied: capture and hold the coveted castle, complete secret missions or claim sacred locations. Only one clan will write its legend in the blood-soaked chronicles of Toshi Ranbo.

Gunsen is for you if you enjoy area control games where every game plays differently depending on the clan you choose, if you want to combine tableau building with tactical clashes, and if the world of samurai and the rival clans of Rokugan captures your imagination. It plays from 2 to 6 players and, according to BoardGameGeek community votes, it shines especially with 3 players.

Fun fact: a free digital adaptation of Gunsen was offered on Board Game Arena in the weeks before the in-store release, a great way to get a taste of the game before having it on your table.

Gunsen is designed by Ben Rosset and Matthew O'Malley, also credited as the designers of The Search for Planet X.
