The book completes the trio of core rulebooks revised in 2024, alongside the Player's Handbook and the Dungeon Master's Guide, and the French edition followed the English release by a few months.

Creative direction on this overhaul falls to Jeremy Crawford, lead designer at Wizards of the Coast on the Dungeons & Dragons line for several years, joined by F. Wesley Schneider as co-lead designer. Their work builds on the original 2014 Monster Manual by Christopher Perkins and his team, reworked from the ground up for this new generation of gaming tables.

This bestiary needs no app and no batteries: it is meant to be opened right at the table. It shines alongside the Player's Handbook 2024 (FR) and the Dungeon Master's Guide 2024, the other two pillars of the revised fifth edition, but a game master can just as easily use it alone as a library of encounters, no matter which edition of the other books sits on the shelf.
