From the moment the lid comes off, the artwork pulls you right in: a Mexican street scene bursting with energy, lined with ochre facades and arched balconies where a crowd of onlookers lean out to watch the parade unfold below. At the center of the scene towers a giant skeleton character in a top hat, drum in hand, seemingly leading the procession through a shower of garlands and colorful confetti. All around, a multitude of revelers with multicolored calavera face paint dance, chat and jostle between market stalls, candles and flower-covered altars typical of Dia de los Muertos. This teeming composition, packed with small visual gags to spot one by one, carries the unmistakable signature of Jan van Haasteren: every corner of the image hides a funny character or an absurd situation, for hours of fun putting it together solo, with family or with friends.
Made from 100% recycled cardboard and printed on sustainably produced paper, this 1000-piece jigsaw puzzle belongs to a large family of illustrated adventures: longtime fans of the series love spotting, hidden in every scene, the shark fin and the self-portrait that turn up in nearly all of the artist's compositions. Released in spring 2023, this title carries the artist's busy, detail-packed formula into the lively streets of Mexico for a colorful celebration.
Drawn by Jan van Haasteren, a Dutch illustrator renowned for decades for his crowded, humor-filled scenes, this title joins a hugely popular collection with dozens of adventures in the same vein, published by Jumbo. Fans of the style will find the same wild energy in other entries in the series, such as the market, beach or street-party scenes that built the artist's reputation.
