Sylvain is a woodcutter in the Bois-Joli. The problem is that he has never been able to cut down a tree. Every time he raises his axe, he stops, looks at the tree and says: “Sorry.” Then he walks away. His axe is enchanted. It talks. And for years now, it has been sulking.
One morning, at the foot of an old oak, Sylvain found a four-leaf clover. Not just any clover: the Trèfle du destin, the Clover of Destiny. Legend says each leaf answers one question, and it never lies. Sylvain looked at the oak. The oak was very old, a little crooked, and it had been blocking the path for a hundred years. Sylvain plucked the first leaf and asked: “Should I cut down this tree?”
(The Dungeon Master, without looking up from the screen: the leaf answered “Yes.” The axe let out a cry of joy. Sylvain said “Sorry” to the oak, to the clover and to the axe, in that order.)
Sylvain wasn’t convinced. He plucked the second leaf and asked the question again, more politely. The leaf answered: “Yes.” The third: “Yes, Sylvain.” He was still hesitating. He took the fourth and last leaf, closed his eyes and asked one last time. The leaf answered: “Cut me down, Sylvain. Please. Signed: the oak.”
The oak explained everything. For a hundred years, it had dreamed of becoming a rocking chair. A nice one, on a porch, in the sun, with a grandmother in it. Every time Sylvain stopped to apologize, the oak was dying of impatience. It had even grown the clover on purpose, at its feet, to get the message across.
So Sylvain did it. He cut down his first tree, crying and apologizing with every swing of the axe. Then he built the finest rocking chair in the kingdom and set it on the inn’s porch. Ever since, it rocks every customer, all day long, creaking with happiness.
(The Dungeon Master, with a smirk: the axe isn’t sulking anymore. It’s jealous. It thinks the chair gets far too many compliments. Sylvain apologizes to both of them.)
In the old oak’s stump, Sylvain found seven little knots of green and orange wood, polished like stones, still smelling of clover. The Trèfle du destin dice (“clover of destiny”) were born. They’re perfect for druids, overly polite woodcutters and players who keep asking the question until they like the answer.
