Sir Sigismond is a knight. He is 87 years old. He has won forty-two tournaments, rescued three princesses (who hadn’t asked him to) and written twelve volumes of memoirs about himself. He always speaks of himself in the third person. He is very pompous. And for a few years now, his knees have creaked when he gets on his horse. It saddens him.
One day, Sigismond heard about Tír na nÓg, the Land of Eternal Youth, a hidden island beyond the Sea of Mists where no one ever grows old. “Sir Sigismond shall go,” he announced to the court. “Sir Sigismond shall get his knees back.” He left the next day, on a boat, in full armour.
(The Dungeon Master, checking their notes: the legend says that on Tír na nÓg, you regain your youth. It doesn’t say how much. The island’s people know: you must stay one hour, no more. Sigismond stayed three days. He found the place “worthy of him.”)
When he came back to court, everyone froze. Sigismond still had his white beard, his armour and his wrinkles. But he had the energy of a five-year-old. He ran everywhere. He jumped on the furniture. He slid down banisters shouting “Sir Sigismond is the fastest!” He raced the horses. He won.
At the king’s supper, he refused to eat his vegetables. He built a fort out of the throne cushions. He asked the king two hundred questions, all starting with “Why?” At 9 p.m., he still wasn’t sleepy. At midnight, he was waking the guards to play hide-and-seek. He found them all. In armour, they hide very badly.
After a week, the whole court was exhausted. The king summoned Sigismond. He asked him, very politely, if he could go back to Tír na nÓg and return some of his youth. Sigismond thought about it. Then he threw a tantrum. He rolled on the floor. In armour. It was very loud.
(The Dungeon Master, trying not to laugh: in the end, the energy wore off on its own after a month. Sigismond fell asleep in the middle of a tournament, standing, on his horse, and slept for three days. When he woke up, his knees creaked again. He was very relieved. So was the court.)
From Tír na nÓg, Sigismond had brought back seven polished pebbles in layers of yellow, purple, blue and green, like dawn over the island of eternal youth. The Tír na nÓg dice (“land of youth”) were born. They’re perfect for Celtic legends, old heroes who never give up and players who are still five years old at heart. Especially at midnight.
In layered yellow, purple, blue and green resin, these polyhedral dice are perfect for your Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder or any roleplaying game (RPG). An eternally young dice set. And way too energetic.
