Taumaril Dice - 7D Set

Taumaril is an elf ranger. In three hundred years, he has never missed a target. Ever. An apple at a hundred paces: hit. A fly in the dark: hit. The tip of another arrow, in mid-flight: hit. The problem was that Taumaril was bored to death. He dreamed of missing. Just once. To see what it felt like.

(The Dungeon Master, checking their notes: Taumaril takes aim. Roll Attack. 20. Again. He sighs. That’s 4,812 natural 20s in a row. He’s starting to find it depressing.)

One autumn, in the pumpkin fields of Saint-Glinglin, he met Lucien. Lucien is a scarecrow. In twenty years, he has never scared a single crow. They land on his head, his arms, his hat. A whole family lives in his shirt pocket.

Lucien begged Taumaril: “Scare them. Shoot right next to them. Not at them, next to them.” Taumaril drew his bow. Then he stopped. If he aimed next to the crow and missed the crow… he would have hit his target, which was next to it. So he wouldn’t have missed. But if he missed next to it, he would hit the crow. So he would miss… his target. So he shouldn’t aim next to it. Or should he?

Taumaril sat down among the pumpkins and thought. Out loud. For six hours. The crows gathered around him to listen. Around midnight, they looked at each other, decided it was too complicated for them, and moved to the neighbour’s field. Lucien counted it as his first scare.

Taumaril, meanwhile, was overjoyed. For the first time in three hundred years, he had missed something: his own reasoning. To thank Lucien, he left him his seven little collector’s bronze bows, cast in green and blue resin, like the forest and the sky.

(The Dungeon Master, trying not to laugh: Taumaril has still never missed an arrow. But every morning, he wonders about it. The crows come back to listen to him think. Lucien calls it “teamwork.”)
