Ottilie is the greatest explorer in the kingdom. One day, at the Temple of a Thousand Flowers, she set off the giant stone ball trap. She ran. The ball followed her. It followed her all the way home. Ever since, the ball has lived in her yard. It rolls behind Ottilie wherever she goes, like a very heavy dog.
One spring, Ottilie decided to bring the ball back to the temple. Out of politeness. The problem is, with a stone ball following you, every tile in the temple goes click. Every click sets off a trap. And every trap makes the ball nervous.
(The Dungeon Master, from behind the screen: You step on a tile. It goes click. The ball rolls. Roll Luck. You got a 1. The ceiling goes click too.)
Darts. Spears. A descending ceiling. Ottilie ended up at the edge of a bottomless pit, the ball rushing toward her, and nothing left to hold on to. That’s when she heard a great laugh, like happy thunder.
It was Falkor. A luck dragon: long, supple, yellow as a summer morning, with soft scales that look like clouds. Luck dragons only appear once in a lifetime, when someone is really, really unlucky. Falkor swooped down, caught Ottilie in mid-air and set her on his back. Everything he flies over becomes lucky. The traps disarmed themselves. The ceiling went back up, apologizing.
Then there was a second weight on his back. The ball had jumped. It didn’t want to be left behind. Falkor laughed so hard that seven of his scales came loose and spun down, engraved with clouds and a little dragon. He brought everyone home. The ball rolled straight to its spot in the yard and hasn’t moved since.
(The Dungeon Master, with a smirk: Ottilie gave up on returning the ball. Falkor comes by every spring. The ball waits for him in the yard. It has learned to sit up and beg.)
The Sauvé par Falkor dice (“saved by Falkor”) were born. Yellow as a luck dragon and engraved with clouds, they’re perfect for explorers, dragon adventures and every player who needs a little luck at the critical moment.
