Philibert is a gelatinous cube. He lives in the exam dungeon beneath the Academy of Magic, where he serves as a test for first-year students. He’s supposed to be terrifying. Really, he dreams of being a dessert. A few years ago, he swallowed a crate of peaches that fell off a cart. He stayed peach-coloured. He thought it was gorgeous.
One Thursday, Dame Fraisine, the Academy cafeteria cook who once fought off an army of orcs with a ladle, was preparing her most famous dish: crispy chicken with plum sauce. She had cooked fifty litres of sauce. She had left them to cool in the hallway. The hallway runs right above the dungeon.
(The Dungeon Master, from behind the screen: the pot was on a trapdoor. The trapdoor wasn’t closed properly. Philibert was right below, taking a nap. I don’t even need to make you roll.)
Fifty litres of plum sauce fell on Philibert. He absorbed it in three seconds. He turned royal blue and purple, with little golden glints. He smelled of ginger and garlic. He looked at himself in a puddle. He cried with joy. He was finally a dish. A real one.
The problem was that, that day, the first-year students had their exam. They entered the dungeon, swords in hand, ready to face the terrible gelatinous cube. They found a big purple cube that smelled like a restaurant. The first student sniffed it. The second took out a fork. Philibert was so happy that he let them taste him. Just a corner.
Dame Fraisine came down to the dungeon with her ladle, furious, looking for her sauce. She saw Philibert, plum-coloured, surrounded by twenty students politely eating him with teaspoons. She tasted him too. She thought for a long time. Then she said: “Needs salt.”
(The Dungeon Master, with a smirk: every student passed the exam. The headmaster asked how they had defeated the cube. They answered: “We ate it.” Technically, that’s true. Philibert grew everything back in a week. He stayed plum-coloured. He’s very proud.)
At the bottom of the pot, Dame Fraisine found seven pieces of candied plum, hardened like gemstones, royal blue and purple with golden flecks. The Sauce aux prunes dice (“plum sauce”) were born. They’re perfect for hungry monsters, formidable cooks and players who negotiate with the dungeon instead of fighting it.
In royal blue and purple acrylic with gold numbers, these polyhedral dice are perfect for your Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder or any roleplaying game (RPG). A sweet-and-savoury dice set that might need a little salt.
