Captain Maarten commands a ghost ship that can never dock. Ever. That’s the curse. So, to pass the time, he started a delivery service. His success rate is 12%. He’s very proud of it: it used to be zero.

One morning, a bottle arrived in the Sea of Mists. Inside was an order written in crayon: “A HANDFUL OF SWEET TARTS. DELIVER TO THE ACADEMY OF MAGIC. URGENT. — Kevin.” Sweet Tarts are those little purple and white candies so sour they make you squint all the way up to your ears.

(The Dungeon Master, checking their notes: Kevin is 8 years old. He has already emptied the archmage’s candy stash. He’s banned from sugar until he’s an adult. So he ordered by sea. Roll Insight. Yes, this is going to end badly.)

Maarten sailed to the Academy’s lake. Docking was impossible, of course. So he counted out the handful (seven candies, he’s honest) and threw them one by one from the deck. The first landed in the archmage’s beard. The second, in the cafeteria soup. The third hit a gargoyle, which said “Ouch.” The fourth, fifth and sixth were caught by ducks.

The seventh landed right in Kevin’s hand. Maarten wept with joy. One out of seven: 14%. The best result of his entire career.

Kevin, however, wanted his whole handful. He spent the week retrieving his candies: from the soup, under the gargoyle, from the ducks (a tough negotiation). And from the archmage’s beard, during class, with sugar tongs. But after a week in the lake fog, the seven candies had hardened like stone: purple and white, still engraved with their little swirling patterns. Impossible to eat. Perfect for rolling.

(The Dungeon Master, writing it down in their notebook: Kevin gave Maarten five stars. With a comment: “Very nice delivery man. Six candies missing. The ducks are mean.”)
