At the very top of Pic-Étoilé, there’s an observatory. And in the observatory there’s Oriane, the royal astronomer. She knows every star by name. She knows when the moon will hide and when the comets will pass. And she has a habit nobody knows about: every time she sees a shooting star, she makes a wish. For someone else.
Never for herself. A wish for the baker who was coughing. One for the little neighbour who was scared of thunderstorms. One for an old dog who had no teeth left. And, strangely, all her wishes came true.
(The Dungeon Master, from behind the screen: A shooting star crosses the sky. Oriane makes a wish. Somewhere in the kingdom, a very chilly yeti feels warm for the first time in his life. He doesn’t know why.)
Every summer, in August, come the Perseids: the biggest meteor shower of the year. That night, Oriane took out her long list. She made a wish for every person in the kingdom. Then for every animal. Then for every tree. At three in the morning, there were still stars falling. And she had nobody left on her list.
She hesitated for a long time. Then, very quietly, for the first time, she made a wish for herself: “A little company.” The last shooting star made a funny noise. It veered, went through the observatory dome and fell, very small, into Oriane’s telescope. When she looked inside, there were seven pieces of night sky, black and blue, full of glitter, with numbers as golden as stars.
The next day, someone knocked on the door. Then someone else. Then the whole village: the baker, the little neighbour, the old dog. They had all heard there was an astronomer up there who made wishes for them. They had brought blankets and hot chocolate.
(The Dungeon Master, with a smirk: Since then, every August, the whole village climbs Pic-Étoilé to watch the Perseids with Oriane. She finally has someone to play dice with. She still makes wishes for others. But now she keeps one for herself.)
