Ducat was a prospector in the mines of Creuse-Fond. Forty years of pickaxe, oil lamp and sweat. He had found gold every day of his life. Well, something that shone like gold. Pyrite. Fool’s gold.

Every evening, he came back up with a bag full of golden nuggets. Every morning, the jeweller looked at them, sighed and said: “Pyrite.” Ducat had the biggest collection of fool’s gold in the kingdom. He didn’t have a penny.

(The Dungeon Master, checking their notes: You find a huge nugget. It shines. Roll Appraisal. Oh, that’s not a skill. Fine. It’s pyrite. It’s always pyrite.)

One day, a caravan passed near the mine. Leading it was Zahira, the stingiest spice merchant of the sands of Arrakis, the one who charges for the shade of her tent by the hour. She looked at Ducat’s bag. She saw right away that it was pyrite. And she smiled.

“I’ll buy it all.” She gave him three pennies. Then she resold the pyrite all over the kingdom, in pretty boxes, with a label: “Fool’s gold. Certified. Guaranteed 100% fake.” People loved it. They gave it as a joke gift. Zahira got even richer. Ducat got three pennies a bag. For the first time, he was making a living.

Then one morning, deep in the mine, Ducat’s pickaxe hit a vein of real gold. A real treasure. He ran to bring it to Zahira. She looked at it with contempt. “Real gold? Everybody has that. Not interested.” Ducat went back into the mine, disappointed, and that’s where he found, right next to the vein, seven purple stones full of pyrite flakes sparkling like yellow stars. He cut them into dice. He kept them.

(The Dungeon Master, with a smirk: Zahira charged him for her advice. He paid in pyrite. She accepted. Each of them thinks they won. It’s the finest business relationship in the kingdom.)
