Nocturnin is a vampire civil servant. He works at the Ministry of Twilight, in the capital, and for 312 years he has stamped the same form: the C-27, the official authorization for nightfall. In triplicate. The young clerks call him Papa Midnite, because he never leaves before midnight. He pretends not to know. He loves it.

One evening, at 11:58 p.m., a zebra walked into the Ministry. A real little zebra, lost, escaped from a menagerie. It stopped in front of Nocturnin’s counter and waited politely, like everyone else.

(The Dungeon Master, without looking up from the screen: at the Ministry of Twilight, everything must be filed. Day goes in one drawer. Night in another. Twilight has its own floor. A zebra is black and white. Nocturnin has never been so stressed in his life.)

Nocturnin took out form D-1 (day). The zebra had too many black stripes. He took out form N-1 (night). Too many white stripes. He tried the C-27 (twilight), but the zebra wasn’t gray. He called his supervisor, who called his, who called an emergency meeting. At 3 a.m., forty civil servants were debating around the zebra. The zebra was eating the lobby plants.

That’s when the Bonhomme Sept Heures walked in. He’s retired, but he comes to file his punctuality papers once a year. He looked at the zebra, then at the clock, then at the zebra. He said: “It’s 3 a.m. This zebra should be in bed.” And the zebra lay down. Immediately. On Nocturnin’s counter.

Nocturnin had a revelation. A sleeping zebra is someone who is in the night. But a zebra about to wake up is someone who will be in the day. He invented a new form, the Z-0: “Creature in transition between two states, striped.” He stamped it in triplicate. It was the first time in 312 years he had created anything.

(The Dungeon Master, writing it down in their notebook: the zebra now works at the Ministry. It’s in charge of dawn and dusk, the two moments when day and night meet. It’s paid in carrots. It never leaves before midnight.)

To mark the occasion, the Ministry cast seven dice in resin the colour of oil-lamp amber, each with a little zebra inside, and numbers as silver as the moon. The Papa Midnite dice were born. They’re perfect for night owls, dedicated civil servants and players who are still playing at 3 a.m.

In sparkling amber resin with a little zebra inside and silver numbers, these polyhedral dice are perfect for your Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder or any roleplaying game (RPG). A dice set that never leaves before midnight.
