Beneath the streets of the capital, in the sewers, lived Réglisse, the toughest rat in the kingdom. He had survived everything. Spring traps. Cats. Poisoned cheese. A wizard who tried to turn him into a frog (he stayed a rat, but he croaks a little on Tuesdays).

Réglisse had a passion: he collected “Death to Rats” posters (“Mort au rat”). He peeled them off the walls at night and papered his home with them. He had three hundred and twelve. His favourite hung above his bed. A painter in a hurry had made a typo. In big red letters it read: “MORT AU RAL.”

(The Dungeon Master, without looking up from the screen: You set a trap. Réglisse disarms it, eats the cheese, resets the trap and leaves you a little thank-you note. He has very nice handwriting.)

The capital’s exterminator, a moustached and very patient man, had spent thirty years trying to catch him. For his last day before retirement, he brought out his secret weapon: seven yellow crystal candies, each with a little warning skull drawn inside. “The most fearsome ever made.”

Réglisse sniffed them. He licked them. He rolled them across the floor. They were made of sugar. Completely harmless. The exterminator had bought a box of Halloween decorations by mistake. The two of them stared at each other for a long time. Then the exterminator sat down in the sewer and burst out laughing. They shared a piece of cheese. They’re friends now.

(The Dungeon Master, with a smirk: Réglisse isn’t afraid of anything. Except one thing. Nobody knows what a “ral” is. He has nightmares. He sleeps with a lamp on.)

Réglisse kept the seven candies. They never melted. He uses them as dice for his Friday games with the exterminator. The Mort au ral dice were born. Yellow as a warning, with a little skull in every die, they’re perfect for survivors, rogues and players whose character stubbornly refuses to die.
