Captain Hilaire commands the Courageux, a proud three-metre sailboat. The Courageux has never left the lake of the Academy of Magic. Never. Hilaire gets seasick. On the lake. When it rains, he gets seasick in puddles. He says it’s “the sensitivity of a great navigator.”

In the evenings, at the tavern, Hilaire tells of his adventures. Waves as big as mountains, mermaids, krakens, a whirlpool that spun him around for three days. It’s all made up. The waves on the lake are four centimetres high. The kraken was a pike.

(The Dungeon Master, checking their notes: the crew of the Courageux consists of two ducks. They’re the same ducks who intercepted the candy of Kevin, the little wizard from the Academy. They signed their contract with a webbed foot. They’re paid in bread.)

One day, a real captain from the Sea of Mists walked into the tavern. He listened to Hilaire tell the story of his kraken. He smiled. Then he said: “Show me.” The whole tavern turned to Hilaire. Hilaire said yes. Hilaire regrets it.

The next day, at dawn, the Courageux set sail. Hilaire held the helm, green as a frog. The two ducks shouted orders. The real captain followed along the shore, drinking his coffee. In the middle of the lake, a gust of wind came up. A ten-centimetre wave hit the hull. Hilaire shouted “ALL HANDS ON DECK!” The ducks dove. Hilaire fell into the water.

He swam to shore, dripping, with seaweed on his head. The real captain was waiting for him. Hilaire expected to be mocked. The captain held out his hand: “I’ve been sailing for forty years. I’ve never seen anyone so scared go anyway.” He gave him his captain’s hat.

(The Dungeon Master, with a smirk: at the tavern, Hilaire now says he faced a wave “the size of a house.” The ducks confirm it. They’re witnesses. They’re also paid in bread.)

At the bottom of the lake, at the exact spot where Hilaire fell in, the ducks found seven translucent blue dice, the colour of fresh water on a windy morning. The Marins d’eau douce dice (“freshwater sailors”) were born. They’re perfect for beginner captains, heroes who are scared but go anyway, and players who exaggerate their exploits just a tiny bit.

In translucent blue acrylic with white numbers, these polyhedral dice are perfect for your Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder or any roleplaying game (RPG). A dice set with sea legs. More than its captain.
