Hippolyte was a beholder. A big floating orb with one giant eye in the middle and ten little eyes on the ends of ten eyestalks. Each eye fires a different magic ray. Monster manuals describe him as “one of the most feared creatures in any dungeon.”

Hippolyte had no desire to scare anyone. He just wanted to watch. People. Birds. Clouds. And above all, sports.

(The Dungeon Master, without looking up from the screen: A beholder floats above the stands. Roll initiative. Oh, no. He’s just asking if the seat next to you is taken.)

Every spring, he went to the great tournament at the capital’s Arena. With eleven eyes, he saw everything: every sword strike, every foot out of bounds, every knight who cheated a little. The king eventually offered him a job: official referee. Hippolyte accepted, crying with joy. From all eleven eyes.

There was just one small problem: his rays. When he was surprised, he petrified. When he was bored, he put people to sleep. And when he got excited, he made things levitate. During the grand final, a knight landed a magnificent blow. Hippolyte got carried away. The whole stadium started to float. The crowd, the knights, the horses, the sausage vendor. Three minutes of general levitation.

Then he saw the knight slip a stone into his gauntlet. “FOUL!” The cheater was petrified on the spot (he’s fine, he came out of it the next day). To thank him, the king gave Hippolyte seven blue, clear dice, each with an eye inside. “So you’ll feel at home.”

(The Dungeon Master, writing it down in their notebook: Hippolyte sees everything. Even your dice under the table. That 20 you just rolled? He saw it. It was a 3.)
