Nestor was the best assassin in the Guild of Shadows, in the back alleys of the capital. The quietest. The most discreet. So discreet that nobody ever noticed him. Ever. Even when he wanted them to.

His clients forgot to pay him. Not out of malice: they forgot they had hired him. His own mother forgot his birthday. At restaurants, waiters never took his order. He ate a lot of bread.

(The Dungeon Master, without looking up from the screen: Roll Perception to spot Nestor. You get a natural 20. You still don’t see him. He’s been sitting next to you since the game started. He brought chips.)

One day, Nestor went to ask the guildmaster for three years of back pay. He walked into the office. He coughed. He said hello. He stood in front of the desk for three hours. The guildmaster finally looked up and said, out loud: “Hey, we should hire a new assassin. We don’t have any left.”

That very evening, the guild held a big meeting to vote on an important question: “Who is Nestor, and why is he on the membership list?” Nestor was in the room. He voted. Nobody saw him. The motion passed: he was struck off the list.

So Nestor took what he was owed. Not the gold: he was honest. He took the guild’s ceremonial dice, the ones rolled to assign contracts. Seven black and red dice, glittering like a starry night, with golden numbers. He left his calling card on the table.

(The Dungeon Master, writing it down in their notebook: Nobody saw the calling card. Nobody noticed the dice were gone. That was two years ago. The guild still assigns its contracts at random. They think it works better.)
