Ottilie was an explorer. Hat, whip, a backpack full of maps and absolute confidence in her ability to run fast. For ten years, she had been searching for the Sacred Idol of the Temple of a Thousand Flowers, lost in the southern jungle.
The temple was exactly like the legends said: vines, giant flowers, poison darts and, at the very back, on an altar, a little idol shaped like a skull covered in flowers, resting on a bed of golden sand.
(The Dungeon Master, from behind the screen: You swap the idol for a bag of sand of the same weight. Roll Dexterity. Well done. You hear a little “click.” A “click” is never a good sign.)
The ceiling opened and a huge stone boulder dropped behind her. Ottilie ran. The boulder rolled. Ottilie leapt over a ravine, slid under a closing door and crossed a rope bridge. The boulder followed. Everywhere. Even across the rope bridge. Nobody understands how.
Once outside, Ottilie turned around, out of breath, ready to die. The boulder stopped right in front of her. And it… purred. Or rather, it made the sound a three-ton rock makes when it’s happy. Nobody had come to play with it in a thousand years.
During the chase, the idol had broken into seven pieces. Each one kept a little skull, green flowers and a bit of golden sand, trapped in clear crystal. Seven dice. The temple didn’t even seem to notice. The boulder, however, followed Ottilie all the way home.
(The Dungeon Master, trying not to laugh: The boulder now lives in Ottilie’s yard. It has flattened two fences and the mailbox. In the evening, Ottilie reads it stories. It prefers the ones where somebody runs.)
