Gnolls are fierce creatures, half-human and half-hyena, who attack in packs while letting out terrifying cackles. Gnollbert didn’t cackle. Gnollbert talked. Non-stop.
He talked about his day. His dreams. His grandmother’s stew recipe. The best way to fold a cape. His opinions on the weather, which he found “a little too changeable lately.” His pack had abandoned him in a cave in the Cackling Hills so he could talk to the echo. The echo quit.
(The Dungeon Master, without looking up from the screen: The gnoll attacks. Actually, no. He starts telling you about his cousin. Roll initiative to interrupt him. You won’t succeed.)
One day, a paladin in full armour walked into the cave, sword raised, ready for battle. Gnollbert said “Oh! Hello!” Then he talked. An hour. Three hours. The paladin lowered his sword. He sat down. He took off his helmet. He took a little nap. Gnollbert kept going. At midnight, the paladin stood up and yelled, close to tears:
“FERME TA GRANDE GNOLL!” (“SHUT YOUR BIG GNOLL!”)
Silence. For the first time in his life, Gnollbert went quiet. Then, very gently, he opened his satchel and took out seven jade-green dice with gold numbers, polished like river stones. “I just wanted someone to play with,” he whispered.
(The Dungeon Master, trying not to laugh: The paladin agreed to play. Gnollbert talked the whole game. The paladin won. He says it was the hardest fight of his career.)
