Falkor is a luck dragon. He’s yellow, his scales are as soft as clouds, and he only appears once in a lifetime, to someone who is truly, truly unlucky. Everything he flies over becomes lucky. That’s his job. He’s very good at it. He has never failed.
One autumn evening, the kingdom’s Great Book of Bad Luck named the unluckiest person of the year. Falkor read the name. He read it again. It was Taumaril, the elven ranger who hasn’t missed a target in 300 years. Not once. 4,812 natural twenties in a row.
(The Dungeon Master, checking their notes: Taumaril dreams of missing. Just once. To know what it feels like. For him, succeeding all the time is the worst luck in the world. The Great Book isn’t wrong. Falkor didn’t get it at all.)
Falkor came down from the sky over the forest where Taumaril was training. He flew over the elf with all his kindness. Taumaril shot an arrow, eyes closed, backwards, over his shoulder, toward the moon. The arrow hit an apple. On a tree. Three kilometres away. The apple fell into a basket someone happened to be carrying past.
Taumaril sat down on the ground and cried. Falkor was lost. He flew over again. Taumaril threw a stone at random: it knocked out a bandit hiding in a bush. He sneezed: the arrow that fired by itself cut a bell rope, which rang for supper. The more Falkor helped, the more Taumaril succeeded. It was his last hope of ever missing, and it was flying away before his eyes.
So Falkor did something no luck dragon had ever done. He closed his eyes. He took a deep breath. And he wished, with all his might, for someone to have bad luck. It tickled him so much that he sneezed. A big dragon sneeze, right as Taumaril was shooting.
(The Dungeon Master, with a smirk: the arrow missed. By a lot. It ended up stuck in the Dungeon Master’s hat, behind the screen. Taumaril shouted with joy for an hour. The Dungeon Master now has a hole in their hat.)
Falkor’s sneeze showered the forest with seven dice in sunset colours: orange, yellow, red and a little purple, the colour of the last ray before nightfall. The Dernier espoir dice (“last hope”) were born. They’re perfect for desperate rolls, heroes with nothing left to lose and players who need a miracle. Or a miss. Depending on the day.
In resin layered orange, yellow, red and purple, these polyhedral dice are perfect for your Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder or any roleplaying game (RPG). A dice set for when you’ve only got one roll left.
