Croustille was an ogre. Big, hairy, under the Snack Bridge on the road to Saint-Glinglin, as tradition demands. But Croustille didn’t eat travellers. He found them “too soft.” Croustille only ate chips.

And not just any chips: sour cream and onion. Plain? “No personality.” Barbecue? “An insult to fire.” Ketchup? He refused to discuss it.

(The Dungeon Master, checking their notes: You want to cross the bridge. The ogre demands a toll. Not gold. Chips. Specific flavour. He checks the bag.)

For years, the system worked. Merchants brought bags, Croustille let them through, everyone was happy. Until the day a blight struck the kingdom’s onion fields. No more onions. No more sour cream and onion chips. Croustille had to switch to plain.

The crisis lasted three weeks. Croustille cried under his bridge. He wrote poems. He refused every bag of plain with a look so sad that two merchants cried with him.

Then, one morning, a little boy showed up with a single bag of sour cream and onion chips, found at the back of his grandmother’s pantry. Best before: twelve years ago. Croustille opened it with reverence. There were no chips left inside. Only the green and yellow seasoning powder, so old it had hardened into seven little glittering cubes.
