Réglisse is a rat from the capital’s sewers. He survives everything: traps, poisons, cats, a dragon (he hid in its nostril). He collects “Death to Rats” posters: he has 312 of them. His only fear is the “ral,” because he once saw a poster with a typo (“Mort au ral”) and never found out what it was.

One evening, in a pipe under the Royal Bank, Réglisse found an old key. A key that glowed purple, blue and green. He tried it on a sewer grate, out of curiosity. The grate opened. He tried it on another one. It opened too. It was a universal key: it opens absolutely anything.

(The Dungeon Master, checking their notes: any rogue in the kingdom would have sold their soul for this key. The Guild of Shadows has been looking for it for 200 years. Réglisse had only one thing on his mind. Cheese.)

He opened the door of the Royal Bank, crossed the vault walking on piles of gold and opened the guards’ kitchen. He took a piece of cheddar. He opened the Grand Museum: nothing to eat. He opened the palace: a whole brie. He opened the king’s treasury by mistake, looking for the pantry. He politely closed it again.

The whole capital was in a panic. Doors were opening on their own at night. Nothing disappeared, except cheese. The captain of the guard declared a cheese emergency. Merchants hid their wheels of cheese in safes. Réglisse opened those too. He left a little thank-you note every time. He’s very well brought up, for a rat.

On the last night, he came to a small wooden door at the bottom of the sewers, with a “Death to Rats” poster nailed to it. He hesitated for a long time. He used the key. Behind the door was the old retired exterminator, in slippers, with two cups of tea and a plate of gouda. “I was wondering when you’d finally open this one,” said the exterminator.

(The Dungeon Master, with a smirk: the Guild of Shadows offered Réglisse a membership. He said no. They didn’t have any cheese. The exterminator always does.)

Réglisse eventually threw the key into the great sewer, so nobody else could use it. When it hit the water, it broke into seven pieces, purple, blue and green, that still glow a little.
