Count Sanguin was a vampire. He lived in the castle on the hill overlooking Saint-Glinglin. A real vampire: black cape, gloomy castle, solid oak coffin and twelve bats serving as the doorbell. He did, however, have a shameful secret he had hidden for four centuries.
He fainted at the sight of blood.
(The Dungeon Master, from behind the screen: The vampire makes a saving throw against fainting. That’s the third one tonight. It’s 7:15 p.m.)
To save his reputation, the count had invented a recipe: beet juice, grenadine, a hint of cream, served lukewarm in a crystal goblet. His guests never suspected a thing. He even had a “wine” cellar, sorted by year. The 1712 beets were particularly good.
In the village, people still found it odd that he ordered three cartloads of beets a week. Madame Clairevoyante, the Saint-Glinglin fortune teller, had even seen “a great red danger” above the castle in her crystal ball. It was a beet.
One night at a grand ball, a vampire hunter slipped in among the guests. He walked up to the count, took his goblet, sniffed it and smiled triumphantly: “I know what this is.”
The count panicked. He dumped the goblet into the marble bath in the parlour, then the whole pitcher, then the entire 1712 reserve, and cast an emergency concealment spell. The bath swirled red and white and suddenly froze into seven translucent dice.
(The Dungeon Master, with a smirk: The hunter looks at the dice. Then at the count. “That was beet juice, wasn’t it?” The count faints. For the fourth time.)
The hunter never exposed the count. He comes back every Friday night. Officially to keep an eye on him. Officially.
