Bertholdo is an elf at St. Nick’s workshop, far up north. He works in the back, near the ribbon cupboard. Every year, the workshop holds a gift exchange: you draw a name at random and give that person a present. Bertholdo drew his own name. Seven years in a row.

Seven years of wrapping a gift for himself, pretending to be surprised and saying thank you to himself. In the eighth year, he cracked. He climbed onto a toy crate and swore an oath, hand on his heart: “I swear I will never, EVER, give myself my own gift again.”

(The Dungeon Master, without looking up from the screen: he swore it so sincerely that the magic took him at his word. A purple aura lit up around him. Like a paladin. Bertholdo is now officially a paladin. Of wrapping paper.)

The aura of the oath glowed every time he thought of the word “gift.” It lit up the whole workshop. The elves could work all night without candles. On the day of the draw, Bertholdo reached into the hat, trembling. He unfolded the paper. His own name. For the eighth time.

The aura turned magenta. Then blinding. The oath forbade him from giving himself his gift, and the draw required him to give it. Bertholdo wandered the workshop for three days carrying a box he couldn’t give to anyone. He glowed so brightly that the reindeer thought it was already Christmas and took off two weeks early.

Finally, he found a loophole in his oath: he had only sworn it for himself. He gave his gift to the reindeer who came back, exhausted, from its premature flight. The reindeer was so touched that it gave him a gift in return. For the first time in his life, Bertholdo received a gift from someone else. The aura gently faded. He opened the box. It was socks.

(The Dungeon Master, writing it down in their notebook: they were the socks Bertholdo had knitted for the reindeer the year before. The reindeer thought they were too small. Bertholdo still cried with joy.)

The next day, where he had sworn his oath, there were seven purple and magenta dice, as clear as the aura that still glowed a little inside them. The Aura du Serment dice (“aura of the oath”) were born. They’re perfect for paladins, elves who keep their word and players who promise never to trust a chest again.

In translucent purple magenta acrylic with white numbers, these polyhedral dice are perfect for your Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder or any roleplaying game (RPG). A dice set that glows when you keep your word.
