One night, Gontran searched the whole library for his glasses. He moved a shelf. Then two. Then he knocked over the Complete Encyclopedia of Probabilities, a 36-volume work bound in black and amber leather, which fell open and spilled all its numbers onto the floor.

The numbers rolled, bounced and gathered together. Thirty-six little black and amber cubes, like old leather and dried ink, with golden pips like illuminated letters. Professor Basile counted them without looking. “One hundred twenty-six.” Of course.
