The old druid (the one who meditates in a hundred-year-old pine and casts random spells when woken up) has a second job: reader of omens. The villagers come to consult him before every big decision.

The problem is, he doesn’t read tea leaves. Or stars. Or chicken entrails, “out of respect for the chickens.” He reads clovers.

One day, a hurried merchant came to ask whether it was the right time to open a dice shop. The druid searched the field. One hour. Two hours. The merchant grew impatient. So the druid picked twelve ordinary clovers, rolled them between his hands while mumbling an incantation, and tossed them on the ground.

They landed as twelve little meadow-green cubes, marked with white pips like drops of dew. And on every single one, the six was facing up.
