Ducat is a prospector. For thirty years, he has dug through the mines of Creuse-Fond looking for gold, and for thirty years, he has found nothing but pyrite, fool’s gold. Zahira, the stingiest spice merchant in the sands of Arrakis, buys it from him and resells it with a label: “Guaranteed 100% fake.” It sells very well.

One summer, Ducat decided to change his luck. He went digging in the Thousand Dunes desert, in the middle of July. Everyone told him it was a bad idea. He answered that all his ideas were bad, so at least this one was new.

(The Dungeon Master, checking their notes: it was 52 degrees Celsius. The sand was so hot that Ducat cooked an egg on it. Then he ate it. Then he realized he hadn’t brought any other food.)

By noon, the heat of the sand was giving him mirages. He saw gold everywhere. He dug under one dune: sand. Under another: sand. He saw a lake of liquid gold: it was the sun on his own shovel. He saw a golden dragon: it was a camel, and it bit him.

So he dug straight down, without stopping, for three days. The hole became a well. The well became cool. At the bottom, in the cold water, he found a smooth green stone, veined with white like heat rising above the sand. Jade. Real jade. The first genuine treasure of his entire career.

Ducat looked at it for a long time. Then he sighed: “More pyrite.” He couldn’t believe it. Nobody could find real treasure after thirty years of pyrite. He sold it to Zahira for the usual price.

(The Dungeon Master, with a smirk: Zahira recognized the jade immediately. She still put it in her shop with the label “Guaranteed 100% fake.” It was the first lie of her career. She took it very hard.)

A customer eventually bought it and had it carved into a big twenty-sided die, jade green swirled with white, like the heat dancing over the dunes. The Chaleur de sable die (“heat of the sand”) was born. Ducat went back to Creuse-Fond. He found pyrite. He was relieved.

This 55mm giant D20 in jade green acrylic swirled with white, with white numbers, is perfect for announcing the big moments in your Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder or any roleplaying game (RPG). A big die worth its weight in gold, even if it’s guaranteed fake.
