Croa! (FR) is a board game that builds itself right in front of you, one tile at a time. On a pond made of 64 face-down tiles, each player leads a colony of frogs headed by a queen and tries to be the last one to keep that queen alive in the pond. With every jump, the tile you land on flips over and reveals an effect that instantly changes the course of the game: a lily pad that launches you further, a mosquito that lets you play again, mud that pins a frog in place, or worse, a hungry pike that swallows it whole.

The heart of this memory game lies in reading the pond carefully: in the advanced mode, tiles that empty out of frogs flip back face down, so you have to remember what is hiding underneath before sending your queen there. Between calculated risks and sneaky tricks, a game of Croa wraps up in about twenty minutes, with just enough tension to make you want a rematch.

You will probably enjoy Croa if you are looking for an accessible board game that never feels shallow, one where the luck of the tiles blends with real tactical thinking. It works just as well for families wanting a quick, fun round as for seasoned players who love memorizing the whole pond to outsmart their opponents.

Since its first release in the late 1990s, Croa has gone through several editions and publishers without ever losing its winning formula, solid proof of how well the concept holds up. The game even got a 25th anniversary edition in 2024, with a brand new double-sided board, keeping things fresh for pond regulars.

The game was designed by Igor Polouchine, with lively illustrations by Yoann that give every frog, pike and corner of the pond real personality.
