des-7d-tic-toc-tic-toc
Tic-Toc Tic-Toc Dice - 7D Set

Anatole is a clockmaker in the capital. He once had a time machine that went back ten minutes. It has been broken ever since the visit of a certain purple mage. Since then, Anatole has learned to live without do-overs. He repairs clocks. And this year, he was given the biggest one: the great clock of the Clock Tower, with its seven round green glass windows, called bull’s-eyes, which watch over the city like seven eyes.

The day Anatole opened the mechanism, the Academy of Magic was on a field trip in the tower. And in the group was Pépin, the clumsiest apprentice at the Academy, the one who got thirty lives through a forbidden incantation (and gave two of them to the cat).

(The Dungeon Master, without looking up from the screen: Pépin leans in to get a better look at the gears. Roll Acrobatics. Failure. You lose a life. You have twenty-one left. Roll Acrobatics again.)

Pépin fell into the mechanism. He reappeared at the entrance with a little “pop.” He fell again. “Pop.” Fell again. On the ninth time, the big cogwheel got caught in his cape. The clock stopped. The entire capital was stuck at 3:14 p.m. Nobody knew when to have supper. The roosters were lost. The Ministry refused to close its offices, since it was never time.

In the past, Anatole would have pulled the lever to go back ten minutes. Not anymore. So he did the only thing he could: he placed Pépin in the middle of the clock face, and for the three days of repairs, Pépin said “tick” and “tock” out loud, once per second, for the whole city. Without a single mistake. It was the first thing he had ever succeeded at in his life. When the great wheel started turning again, the seven green bull’s-eye windows popped out of their frames with relief and rolled to Anatole’s feet. In each one, a little eye was still watching the time.

(The Dungeon Master, with a smirk: The great clock now works perfectly. Except at noon, when it still goes “tick… tock… sorry.” Anatole says it’s a manufacturing defect. Pépin says it’s his signature.)

The Tic-Toc Tic-Toc dice were born.
