He guards the Snack Bridge on the road to Saint-Glinglin, and he eats only one thing in the whole world: sour cream and onion chips. To cross his bridge, you have to pay a toll. In chips. He once refused a bag of ketchup chips. The traveller had to take a three-day detour.

Every end of summer, Saint-Glinglin holds its big agricultural fair, with a contest for the finest watermelon. This year, the judge fell ill the day before the contest. They needed someone with a very big mouth to taste fifty watermelons in one day. The mayor thought of Croustille.

(The Dungeon Master, without looking up from the screen: Croustille had never eaten a watermelon in his life. Or any fruit. Or anything that wasn’t a sour cream and onion chip. The mayor knew that. The mayor was desperate.)

Croustille sat down at the judges’ table with a napkin around his neck. They brought him the first watermelon. He tasted it. He thought for a long time. Then he gave his verdict: “Too much water. Not crunchy enough. No trace of sour cream. Two out of ten.” The second one: “Too red.” The third one: “Why is it wet?”

The farmers caught on fast. By noon, they had all changed strategy. One farmer sprinkled his watermelon with dried onions. Another fried his. A grandmother sliced hers very thin and baked it all night. Croustille took notes, very seriously: “Three out of ten. Four out of ten. Five out of ten, but only for the effort.”

The last watermelon arrived at four o’clock. It was huge, green and red, perfect. Croustille cut it open. Inside, there was no watermelon. There were forty bags of sour cream and onion chips. A little boy had hollowed out the watermelon and filled it up overnight. Croustille cried. He gave it ten out of ten. The little boy won the blue ribbon.

(The Dungeon Master, trying not to laugh: since then, Croustille writes a column in the village newspaper: “The Watermelon Review.” Every week, he tastes a watermelon and gives it two out of ten. He remains the most feared critic in the kingdom. And the most predictable.)

On the evening of the fair, seven giant watermelon seeds were left on the judges’ table, green and raspberry red, sparkling with glitter, and a village wizard hardened them into dice. The Critique de pastèques dice (“watermelon review”) were born.
